Bunions, also called hallux abducto valgus, are a deviation of the joint at the base of the big toe. The two bones of the joint take opposite directions forming a bump on the inside of the big toe that can grow at varying rates.

The main cause of the bunion is a biomechanical imbalance that is usually hereditary. With the progression of the deformity, difficulty wearing shoes and deep joint pain may occur.

A podiatrist can determine the stage of the bunion and recommend wearing orthotics to control the biomechanical imbalance and reduce the progression of joint. Cortisone injections to reduce inflammation and bone surgery to correct the alignment bone can also be considered.
